Workwell

submitted by Rowan Merewood last modified 2010-02-26 17:05

Workwell is a partnership between the NHS and business support providers across the Black Country (Walsall, Sandwell, Wolverhampton and Dudley) and West Birmingham.

Small to medium businesses

Workwell collaborates with the Chamber of Commerce/Business Link, local authorities, employer groups and trade associations, to promote and improve workplace health and health and safety among SMEs.

Companies are offered an occupational health and safety review and an action plan, which leads to follow-up services, such as: occupational health and safety training; health promotion programmes including smoking, drugs, nutrition, and exercise; and signposting to specialist health and safety support agencies.

Primary care

Workwell, in partnership with primary health care staff, private providers, community development workers and local businesses, delivers and evaluates health promotion activities including smoking cessation and personal health checks in the workplace.

Older workers

The Sandwell Pre-Retirement Pilot Project, funded by the Department of Health, provides health screening on a local industrial estate for SMEs and Black and Ethnic Minority communities. The Project is developing a mid-life planning 'train the trainer' programme.

Voluntary sector

Workplace health assessments, and specific health and safety training are available for voluntary organisations due to a working partnership between Workwell, the Training for All Foundation and Sandwell Council Voluntary Organisations.

Other services

Additional Workwell projects include occupational health education for young construction workers, fire risk assessment CD-ROM for businesses, asbestos awareness cards for construction and maintenance workers, and health at work training programmes for young people.

Awards

BUPA Foundation Health at Work Award 2002; Regional HSE Award October 2001; Working Well Together Award, National 4C Construction Awards 2003; ZM/IOSH Public Services Specialist Group annual awards 2004.

Funding

Workwell is funded by Advantage West Midlands Regional Development Agency and PCTs.
